Why We Keep Coming Back to South Dakota

South Dakota

If you’ve noticed a lot more South Dakota content lately, you’re not imagining things.

For the past few years, we’ve been building a home on my husband’s family’s cattle ranch in western South Dakota. It’s a project that’s been years in the making, and this summer we’re finally getting to experience what we dreamed about from the beginning.

This isn’t just a vacation home. It’s a place rooted in family history. Casey’s family has ranched this land for generations, and while I didn’t grow up on a ranch, I quickly fell in love with the lifestyle and the traditions that come with it.

We wanted our boys to have a place where they could grow up chasing sunsets instead of screens, feeding animals before breakfast, riding in the pickup with their grandparents, and learning where their food comes from. A place where family traditions are still alive and hard work is part of everyday life.

Building a home out here has been an adventure all its own. From designing a space that feels true to the ranch while still reflecting our style, to watching every stage of construction come together, it’s been a labor of love. Now, getting to wake up here each morning makes every decision and every delay feel worth it.

This summer has reminded me that some of life’s best moments aren’t the big milestones. They’re Wednesday night rodeos, checking cows, long dinners on the porch, kids running barefoot until the sun goes down, and the quiet that only wide-open spaces can bring.

So if you’re new here, welcome. Over the coming weeks I’ll be sharing more of our home, life on the ranch, the traditions I’m learning, the people who make this place so special, and everything that makes summers in South Dakota unforgettable.

I’m so glad you’re here to follow along.
