Boot Day

boot dayIt’s coming up on one of my favorite days of the year… this day is honestly like a holiday to me and, I suspect, other fashionistas. The problem is, it takes a bit of concentration and (I’m not gonna beat around the bush here because I know that you, dear readers, will understand) psychic ability to discern the exact date. It’s not on any calendar I have and it varies depending on what city (or country) I’m living in, but it like the sun rising each morning it arrives every year.

You know how every year, late Indian summer gently turns to early fall. The leaves slowly turn reddish and gold and the morning dog walk has that crispness – a tiny shiver before walking into the sunshine. You briefly consider putting on that cute bomber jacket you just bought, but then it’s only a short walk and your neighbors are sort of scrubs, anyway. You make a mental note: this weekend, it is time.

You know what I’m talking about, right? Because you (and I) are not the only ones with this original thought. That weekend, at brunch or shopping at the farmer’s market or out whimsically apple picking with your husband, you and every other woman age 20-40 has magically received the same signal like a beam from on high:

Time to pull the knee length brown boots over jeans and wander into the world!

It happens so fast…and it’s coming, ladies. Even though DC puts a kibosh on my autumn ensembles every single year.

What am I supposed to do with this:

But October is here. And it’s time to drag the boots out and put the sandals away in my yearly ritual of swapping summer to winter items in my closet. And every year as I pull out the woolly sweaters, light jackets and, yes, boots, I think to myself, “What the heck? Am I starting a collection?” I have one of everything. If you ask my husband, I have two of everything. But annual Boot Saturday requires a basic; say the ubiquitous camel-colored Frye over skinny jeans?

So that’s that first Saturday – think of it as day one of the annual boot administration-you don’t want to make waves with your base. But this year, why don’t we all challenge ourselves to be a bit different and wear something else on Sunday? Take a look at these gorgeous options. I wouldn’t suggest them if I didn’t have one or more in my own closet. They’re gorgeous, comfortable and current. And they’ll make you feel like fall has arrived to cater to your needs, not the other way around.

What about the dudes wearing puffy coats when it’s 50 degrees out? They couldn’t wait to put that shit on!
